the group who can recognize cars from the Maybrook Railroad . Now the Sanboothes are planning to move to Delaware .
But Robert Sanboothe ’ s roots are in Maybrook , where he grew up . His family owned a gas station , with a diner next door and the railroad behind them .
“ Steam engines were just being phased out then ,” he said . He notes how the railroad had been at the forefront with technology , having phones and lights before people in the village did . Old phones and lights are among the exhibits in the museum ’ s four display cases , along with 350 photos .
The Maybrook Railroad museum gets about 200 visitors a year , he said , though last year a bus load of visitors brought the total to 280 . To give Maybrook Railroad Museum more visibility , he advocated for recognition of the Maybrook Railroad as a line that used what became the Rail Trail over the bridge between Highland and Poughkeepsie , but to no avail . Nor has the county provided the museum with grants for the last two years , he said . Selling donated books , the museum made about $ 500 per year , which paid for a desk and informational materials , he said .
Diane Sanboothe , who joined the group two years ago , started providing regular reports on the museum to the village board , including her discovery that the charter had expired . But the group decided the cost of reinstating the charter through the New York State Library System would probably be too costly . A fee for every year the charter had lapsed would be part of that cost , she said .
“ I don ’ t know why the village board wants a charter ,” she said , “ and I ’ m not pursuing it . With a charter , people can write off what they donate . But the museum doesn ’ t bring in many donations .”
The museum was moved recently from a room at Maybrook Community Center to a smaller room at Maybrook Government Center , where a divider had to be installed to accommodate the museum ’ s many photos , said Robert .
“ Now the mayor wants the photos and display cases moved to the village board room and the court ,” said Diane . “ I think railroad things would make it look like a junk yard .”
Maybrook Mayor Dennis Leahy said he and village board members would discuss the issue with historical society members after the holidays .
Robert Sanboothe will be displaying his model trains at Walden Library December 11-12 .
