Pastor Troy R . Johnson ( black shirt , center ) and volunteers from the Greater Love Deliverance Center of Walden , served a Thanksgiving meal to local families on Saturday .
By GARY M . AYD
Dozens of people were fed a homemade Thanksgiving dinner Saturday thanks to the ministry of a 13-year old congregation in Walden .
The Greater Lover Deliverance Center II ( GLDC ) is the second location of a ministry founded by pastor Troy R . Johnson . The church is at 175 S . Montgomery St . in Walden and offers Sunday school from 8:30 to 9 a . m . Sunday , followed by praise and worship from 9-10:30 . They also host prayer and bible study services on Tuesday evenings and even a prayer line Wednesday and Friday at noon .
The church currently has a small family-like congregation at the Walden location , and a slightly larger gathering at the Bronx outpost .
In addition to a social media presence online , the church also has its own dedicated website gldc21 . com and can be reached via phone at ( 845 ) 313-3122 . The second and original branch of the church is in the Bronx and was founded in 2003 .
Johnson , the pastor of both churches is a retired New York City Corrections Officer , working his final shift in 2010 . Born and raised in the Bronx , Johnson first came into the Christian faith at the age of 18 .
“ I ran from the call to pastor for a long time ,” Johnson said . “ But God is about serving .”
The meal fed more than 50 families last year , and while the final tally for this year ’ s feeding was not available as of this writing , the goal is 100 . In addition to their own digital channels previously mentioned , GLDC got the word out by way of flyers , word of mouth and some good old fashioned NYC-style street hustle by
Turkeys and all the fixings were prepared at the church .
pastor Johnson .
“ If people don ’ t show up I will go down to main street and drive around and get them ,” Johnson said . “ I will stand there with signs , drive people back , do whatever I have to to make sure they are served and fed those in need .”
“ We try to do this luncheon every year ,” Johnson said . “ We figure if we aren ’ t going to serve the community we may as well take our sign down and go home .”
