TIMES WALLKILL VALLEY Vol. 34, No 10 3 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2016 3 ONE DOLLAR www.WallkillValleyTimes.net Bridgework to close portion of 52 Weekend By RACHEL COLEMAN “The project requires full closure of Route 52 and traffic will be detoured around the construction site,” states a letter from the New York State Department of Transportation to the Montgomery Town Board. According to the letter, the bridge on Route 52 over the Tin Brook is being completely removed and reconstructed. The plan is to close Route 52 from the intersection with South St. Andrews Road to the intersection of Rock Cut Road for approximately six months. In the meantime, traffic will be detoured onto South St. Andrews Road, Plains Road, Route 300, Rock Cut Road and Forest Road. While the bridge improvement is welcome, the detour is another story. Town of Montgomery Police Chief Butch Amthor told the town board on Thursday that he is “certainly anticipating a lot of resident complaints” and the police department is “going to prepare for it as best we can.” Town Board members voiced concerns about the roads chosen for the detour. Part of the detour is the intersection of Route 300 and Plains Road, where the town of Shawangunk recently requested a fully functioning traffic light due to safety concerns and a history of accidents. The NYSDOT turned down that request, but did make some improvements such as new stop signs and cut and trimmed brush. Currently the intersection is controlled by stop signs and a flashing traffic light. The initial set up for work on the bridge is expected to start in mid-April Continued on page 4 Flying leap for fame in the country? Story, photos on page 40. City dwellers from Manhattan and beyond love to spend a weekend in the country at a quaint bed and breakfast, and the Town of Shawangunk is taking steps to get in on that trend with some proposed amendments to its zoning laws. At Thursday’s Town Board meeting, the first introductory local law of the year was revealed, and it calls for the town’s zoning laws to be altered to create two new uses known as the Bed and Breakfast-Residence, and the Bed and Breakfast-Inn. Under the proposed law, the Residence category would allow for an owner-occupied single family home to rent out up to three bedrooms at a time. The Inn category is more expansive, as the establishment’s owner would be allowed to rent out as many as 15 bedrooms in the bed and breakfast. Guests in either kind of hotel cannot stay for more than 14 consecutive days, and personal kitchen and dining facilities are prohibited in the guest rooms. The idea of instituting the new bed and breakfast regulations came about Continued on page 4 SERVING CRAWFORD, GARDINER, MAYBROOK, MONTGOMERY, PINE BUSH, SHAWANGUNK, WALDEN AND WALLKILL
