Wallkill Library welcomes new manager

By MEGHAN MOORE
“ We are a small library but it ’ s a great library ” said Lisa Palmer , the new manager of the Wallkill Public Library .
Palmer moved to the area in 2001 from Washingtonville and began working at the library in 2008 . Palmer spent a majority of her career till then working for the Times Herald Record ; she was now looking for a new job that would allow more time with family .
“ I was bringing my son to story time at the time when one day I mentioned in conversation to the former director , Mary Lou Carolan , that I would love to work in a library . When she became the director she called me and offered me a job ,” Palmer said .
Eight years later Palmer decided to take on this new manager position because she simply “ loves libraries and loves working in them .” Palmer was going to wait to go into management , in order to save for her son ’ s education before her own goals in getting her Master of Library Science degree ( MLS ). The master ’ s degree required for a professional librarian position . But upon the director leaving she was able to be promoted to manager and within a small town not need her MLS just yet . Palmer does plan on achieving her MLS in the near future because she now has the ability to pay for both her son ’ s and her own education .
Palmer has found that she particularly loves what this library can do for bringing

the community together . Palmer said that it is not all her , though .
“ The staff here is the best ,” she said . Everyone that does their job brings their own specific talent to it .”
Palmer expresses her love for seeing what they can do together as a library , especially for the schools . “ I like this community , I know this community and our library does impact a great amount of people . I like our location and I like

that we can be a community center that I would like this place to be .”
The work the library does with the schools includes various programs and offering the schools what they might not have in their own libraries .
She thinks they are more than a community center for kids . “ I hope it has a positive impact on education , because we are lucky enough to be so close to the schools , I like to hope it does ,” she said .
Palmer also has big plans for the library and they all include the community .
“ I want to collaborate with the town .” Palmer said . “ I am determined to meet their expectations .”
She sent a survey out to local residents to receive the necessary feedback for the strategic five-year plan for the library . Palmer “ wants to know what the community wants and if they are delivering .”
She also said that she wants to “ enhance their entertainment , enhance their reading and do everything we can for them .”
When asked about future plans for the library she said she “ has no skin in that game ” she wants to do what the voters want . If they want a new building , they will get one , she said . The talk of a new library building has been discussed for years now . A frequent topic of change for the town that has never been fully addressed . For options like this Palmer said , “ I want to make sure people get what they want .”
