Montgomery Village looks
at improving water quality
By MELANIE ZERAH
The Montgomery Village Board is
focusing on the maintenance of clean
water and pursuing of initiatives to
improve village water quality.
According to a Drinking Water Quality
Report for 2016, the village is not in
violation of any surplus of contaminants,
as per New York State and Federal
standards. This report is on the Hyndman
Heights Water District, a system that
purchases its water from the Village of
Montgomery and supplies water to 12
homes and a business along State Route
17K.
Superintendent of Public Works Ralph
Nelson said at a June 6 village board
meeting that there will be a meeting for
the reconstruction of Front Street water
main with Cedar Construction. The
expected finish date for any work on the
water main is August 1 of this summer.
“We want to start in two weeks,”
Nelson said. “We will see when Cedar is
ready and we can make sure businesses
know if there will be disruption.”
Although, Nelson reported at the
meeting that the first round of testing
completed by the New York State
Department of Health (DOH) returned
“perfect,” this test only represents the
first quarter out of four for testing.
Since the wet season of April, with
a surplus of rain and snow-melt, more
water means infiltration of contaminants.
Nelson and the board discussed the
possibility of a $20,000 PILOT study of
water quality encouraged by the DOH
depending on subsequent water test
results.
In other business, Steven Walsh, Chief
of Montgomery Police reported that
village police had completed annual fire
arms training with intentions to complete
night shoot training sessions this fall.
In the coming week, breath analysis
training will also take place at the police
academy. The Chief also reported that
memorandum agreement between the
PBA and village was ratified by the board,
currently has a draft prepared for the
next village meeting to have documents
signed.
The board, at their June 6 meeting
approved the New York State Department
of
Transportation
resolution
in
connection with work affecting State
highways. This resolution entails the
village will be liable for infrastructure
work, and that the village is in possession
of the appropriate permits to do so.
The consideration of adopting a
resolution in supp ort of the Hudson River
Sloop Clearwater’s Sail to Washington,
DC to maintain clean water and other
environmental protections was moved
to be discussed to the next meeting, as
the board wanted to consider all of the
resolutions provisions. The resolution
is to be a memorialization in support
of environmental efforts, and includes
current rollbacks of federal water policy.
“We want to make sure that we support
all of the rollbacks, not just some if we
are going to adopt this resolution,” said
Mayor L. Stephen Brescia.
Also approved at the meeting was
the Daisy Troop’s use of the Recreation
Center in September.
The next board meeting will take place
on June 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.
