Ricky Tanagretta leads the Survivor ’ s Lap .
By GARY M . AYD
An event the likes of which are seldom seen in the Hudson Valley , both in scope and duration took place at the Town of Crawford Town Park Saturday . Starting early in the morning and concluding late at night , the 2017 Pine Bush Relay for Life did what it has done for over a decade in uniting the local community .
Flush with sponsors and community members , this year ’ s rendition was held amidst pristine , sunshine , ocean blue skies and a backdrop of positive energy , spurred on by uplifting music put out by DJ Jeff Blizzard , who has been the DJ for the event for the last 10-years .
Now in its 13 year , this year ’ s Pine Bush Relay was led by Grand Marshals

Orange County Planning Board had posed the alternative of allowing more clearance if additional trees are planted on the property or elsewhere in the town .
Warden also argued that the town should exempt “ solar farms ” that are located in the town ’ s agricultural district — like the one proposed by his clients .
Town Supervisor Mike Hayes stated that while Warden referred to the commercial solar project as a “ farm ” it was not recognized as such by the NYS
Fritz and Gretchen Meier , with Ricky Tanagretta serving as the grand marshal of the always popular and inspiring survivor lap . Tanagretta and all those behind and beside him in the survivor lap wore shoulder sleeves identifying how long they had been living since winning their battle with cancer .
Donna Henke , a breast cancer survivor of nearly a decade , has been relaying for 16-years and is one of the driving forces behind the Pine Bush Relay . “ The whole experience is very uplifting and generates a lot of hope ,” Henke said . “ For someone recently diagnosed to see all these survivors , some of them 10 or even 20-years on since their fight provides immense hope ; I ’ m personally proud to be a cancer survivor .”

Town Councilman Dan Dempsey pointed out that one of the comments from the Orange County Planning Board was a “ huge ” reduction of the minimum front yard setback from 150 feet to 30 feet .
“ I think we need to have a conversation … before sending it on its way ,” said Dempsey .
The public hearing was continued to July 6 at 7 p . m .
A representative from Frontier approached the board at the same meeting , seeking a franchise agreement to provide television services in the town ( outside
In years past the event has done exceedingly well in generating funds for the American Cancer Society , in fact it recently went over the $ 2 million mark in cumulative funds raised , an impressive accomplishment by any measure , especially when you consider the size of the Pine Bush Community . Last year the event raised $ 180,000 and Henke expects to be around $ 130,000 this year .
Prior to her own battle with breast cancer , Henke ’ s sister succumbed to the disease some 19 years ago at just 36 . She left behind two kids who at the time were 6 and 8 .
“ Families can celebrate the survivors and remember those who have been lost ,” Henke said . “ That ’ s part of what makes this event so special .”

the three villages only ). The company would match the franchise fee of the incumbent provider . The board made no decisions , asking the representative to provide the board with the exact fee amount .
In other business , the board approved going out to bid on the water line extension for the Neelytown West Water District . The bids are due by July 6 at 2 p . m .
The board also voted to hire two part-time police dispatchers at the rate of $ 12.88 per hour , with a probationary period of six months .
