Maybrook celebrates Independence Day
By GARY M. AYD
On a clear summer night there are few
things more patriotic and American than
fireworks. Such was the scene at Veterans
Memorial Park in Maybrook Friday
Parking was certainly at a premium,
with cars lined up behind the ball field
near the Maybrook Senior Center, as well
as up and down the street adjacent to the
fencing enclosing the park.
While plenty of carnival games, food
and activities throughout the evening kept
kids and adults alike busy and entertained,
those were just the appetizers to the main
course; a dazzling display of multicolored
fireworks which began shortly after 9:30
p.m. and concluded just before 10.
“We came in from California to visit
my son” Theann Nassen, said. “We saw
a fireworks display there before we came
and it was nothing like this one, this one
is much longer than what I remember
there.”
Beyond an occasion for family reunions,
it’s also a time for time spent with friends.
As was the case for Travis Conklin of
Campbell Hall. Travis, was spending the
evening with his best friend Barkly, a
4-year old Lab and Pitbull mix. Despite
Barkly’s reservations and fear about the
fireworks displayed with constant loud
barking, no doubt he was happy to be
there.
“Barkly was found in an abandoned
house in Patterson New Jersey and I got
him from a shelter,” Conklin said. “I’m
definitely having to bribe him with treats
today to keep him somewhat calm but he’s
doing ok.”
The skies above Maybrook lit up for 30 minutes last Friday.
