The Orange County Board of Elections counted Montgomery IDA grants $1.8 million in tax breaks absentee and affidavit ballots on Tuesday morning. With those votes counted, Maher secured the Republican nomination by 20 votes. There were 1,320 votes total. “Today’s final election results prove that every single vote matters,” Maher said. “I plan to work twice as hard leading up to November’s General Election, reaching out to voters of all parties to discuss the important issues facing our town and a vision for the future.” The most important issues to Maher’s campaign are updates to the town comprehensive plan, town infrastructure improvements and the implementation of a town-wide youth employment program. Since Winchell won the Conservative line he will still run in the November elections. Maher won the Continued on page 4 Solar boom Fanfare Four new projects gain approval By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] The Town of Montgomery Industrial Development Agency (IDA) granted $1.8 million in net tax abatements in fiscal year 2018. Six projects received financial assistance in fiscal year 2018: Kadge, LLC, Polich Tallix, Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union, Spruce Properties, LLC, United Natural Foods, Inc. and Goodwill Properties. The IDA is a public benefit corporation that grants economic incentives to encourage job development, economic growth and the general prosperity of its constituents. “We’re looking to keep the town viable with new business, employment opportunities, spreading of the tax base, to keep the town growing,” IDA Chair Continued on page 5 By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] Bond Brungard Wallkill graduates celebrated at their commencement on Friday. Graduation coverage begins on page 18. Solar is booming as four community solar projects recently gained final approval in the Towns of Montgomery and Crawford. All projects are community distributed generation, which means any resident within the district can sign up to receive power from the plant. While bills would still be issued by a residents’ utility company, residents would receive a discount on their energy bill. The power from the projects feeds directly into the energy grid, allowing anyone to access the renewable energy without having to install panels on their own property.
