Gunnar Meland of Pine Bush gets a hearty welcome at home after hitting a home run against Patterson last weekend in the Section 3 tournament. Pine Bush’s 11-12 year-olds won the game and the title and head to the state tournament next week. Story, photos on page 40.
Drug dealers and users who pay rent
in Maybrook could soon be sent packing,
thanks to a new law adopted Monday
night by the village board.
The village board, this week, adopted a
local law entitled “…ability of the village
of Maybrook to force the eviction of
tenants from rental properties where it
has been determined that such rental
properties are being used for the purpose
of illegal drug use, possession or sale.”
In short after two convictions of illegal
drug use, possession or sale within a year
and inside an apartment the village will
have the authority to evict the criminal
from the rental property on their own.
Since Mayor Dennis Leahy has gone
into office eight years ago he and the
board have been trying to “chip away at
the big tree with the little axe,” a saying
Leahy frequently uses, to bring change to
the community.
“This is nothing that is going to hurt
us,” Deputy Mayor Noreen Reynolds said.
“Yes, there is only benefit down the
line,” Trustee Kevin Greany agreed.
This is one of many initiatives the
board has made to further the safety
and economic development of the village.
Earlier in the summer the board approved
the installation of cameras outside the
Government Center, along Tower Avenue
and various other streets in the village.
