Five cars in Montgomery collision , one killed

State Police are investigating a fatality involving six motor vehicles on Interstate 84 near Maybrook .
On July 13 , at approximately 12:20 p . m ., four vehicles ( 2016 White Hyundai Sante Fe , 2016 Freightliner Tractor Trailer , 2014 Mitsibushi Outlander , 2003 Sprinter Van towing a small utility trailer ) were stopped in traffic in the left lane of Interstate 84 westbound near mile marker 28 .
The right lane of Interstate 84 was closed due to an upcoming construction zone . A 5th vehicle , ( 2010 Dodge Truck ), was slowing down approaching the stopped traffic when it was struck from behind by a 6th vehicle ( 2004 Freightliner Tractor Trailer ). The force of the tractor trailer striking the Dodge truck caused the Dodge , which is occupied by two adults , to flip over approximately four times coming to rest in the grassy center median . The Tractor Trailer continues into the rear of the Sprinter Van , which is occupied by two adults , crunching the van into the Mitsibushi , which was occupied by two adults and a nine-year-old male . The impact caused the Mitsibushi to crumble underneath the 2016 Freightliner , driven by sole occupant , and push the Freightliner into the 2016

The Maybrook Fire Department welcomed their new firefighter Kate Nielson on June 11 . At age 17 , Nielson is the youngest female from Maybrook to complete the class .

Nielson recently moved to Maybrook with her mother only a year ago from Montgomery and felt a need for a way to connect to her community . Upon seeing how the fire department contributes to the community , she immediately went to the firehouse and signed up for classes . Instantly she felt connected with them and loved everyone there .
For the next 14 weeks , Nielson attended a class every Saturday . It consisted of both physical and written tests .
“ It was challenging but the people didn ’ t want you to fail , and they really helped you push yourself through it ,” Nielson said . “ That got me through it all , telling myself I cannot give up .”
Nielson recalls a drill called the “ Anthill ” where a hill is covered in ladders and you have to go up and down them in full gear . She remembers thinking that was one of the most
Emergency responders at the scene of a crash last Wednesday on I-84 .
Hyundai Sante Fe , which was occupied by two adults .
Occupants of the Mitsibushi and Sprinter Van were trapped inside the vehicles and had to be extracted out . The passenger of the Sprinter Van , identified as Christopher Marks , age 43 , of Chester , was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Medical Examiner ’ s
difficult physical tasks . Nielson is excited to begin her fire fighter career and is looking forward to

Office . Those injured were taken to area hospitals ( Orange Regional Medical Center , St Luke ’ s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh and Cornwall Campuses ) including several that were flown to Westchester County by Medivac .
Investigation is continuing with charges pending .

Maybrook welcomes youngest female firefighter

Kate Nielson is shown holding her Fire Chief Association Award from Maybrook Fire Department congratulating her on passing her exams . the whole experience . “ I love it , I love being a firefighter already ,” Nielson said .
Although she is only a junior firefighter and can only do so much , she has liked the opportunity of observing some calls she has been on and still learning more with each experience . In January she will be turning 18 and will finally have more responsibility on calls .
“ I know there will be qualities I will gain that I wouldn ’ t have if I didn ’ t become a firefighter . I am hoping I gain discipline , work ethic and everything else from this great experience ,” said Nielson .
Nielson attended Most Precious Blood in Walden and now attends John S . Burke Catholic High School . The rising senior already has her future planned out as well . With her love for the environment , she wants to attend SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry after high school and become a Forest Ranger .
Nielson would like to personally thank Fire Commissioner Eric Scholz as she does not think she would have been able to do it all without him
