The state mandates that districts must re-adopt their codes every year, and Valley Central used the opportunity this cycle to address the growing usage of e-cigarettes. The devices, also known as vaporizers, are ostensibly designed to help smokers quit their habit, but the technology has other uses as well. Vaporizers allow the user to inhale a flavored liquid that could include nicotine or other sweet candy-like flavors. The devices can also be used as a way for vapers to surreptitiously smoke marijuana. Electronic cigarettes are frequently designed in colorful ways that are seemingly marketed to young users. As part of its new Code of Conduct, Valley Central has categorized e-cigarettes alongside other harmful products. Under the third part of the Student Discipline section of the Plain Language Summary, the code now states that the “Valley Central School District will not tolerate violence, threats, bullying and substance abuse. Continued on page 3 By MEGHAN MOORE Joseph LoCicero begins his seventh year on the Wallkill Board of Education and his third term as board president. He was unanimously elected to the top spot by his fellow board members at last week’s reorganization meeting. The board also welcomed back Tom Frisbie who was re-elected board president and new board member Dustin Palen who was elected to his first term in May. Palen, and incumbents LoCicero and Leif Spencer were administered the Oath of Office by LoCicero District Clerk Kelli Corcoran at the start of the meeting. The board president, fresh from his own re-election and the passage of the school budget, is happy to maintain the status quo. “We are looking to stay where we are as we move in a very tight knit machine,” he said. The district received a $2.6 million grant recently for the advancement of technology in the schools. Thus far, they have been able to bring in Smart Boards and a new sound system. But those are only two of the ways they will be improving the technology for the district.
