Valley Central loses $900,000+ in state aid
By JANE ANDERSON
In the midst of preparing a budget for 2016-17, the
Valley Central Board of Education has learned that the
State denies
traffic light
request in
Shawangunk
district will lose $969,000 of state aid for the current year
because necessary reports were never filed with the state.
In addition, the district may face undetermined penalties for overestimating the number of expected spe-
cial-education students, Assistant Superintendent of
Business Lisa Raymond told the board at its regular
meeting Monday night.

Requests from the town of
Shawangunk for a fully functioning
traffic light at the intersection of Route
300 and Plains Road have been denied
by the New York State Department of
Transportation (NYSDOT).
Town board members noted at their
meeting last week that the intersection
has a history of traffic accidents, which
prompted their request. The NYSDOT
however, does not feel that the problems
warrant a traffic signal.
While there have been no fatalities at
the intersection over the last two years,
Shawagunk Police Chief Frank Petrone
said they have handled a dozen accidents—some with very serious injuries—
since 2014, including one accident so far
this year.
Statistics from the Ulster County
Sheriff’s Department and the New York
State Police, which take over patrolling
the town between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. on
weekdays, were not immediately available.

Montgomery native Paul Teutul Jr. of
“American Chopper” fame plans to open

Village of Montgomery board meeting.
Representative Richard “Dickie”
Baxter told the board that Teutul is interested in four adjacent buildings along
Route 17K, one of which was recently
the home of an auction house. There are
existing bay doors and other elements
that make it a good site for such a business, Baxter said. The only issue is that
the B2 zoning of that area doesn’t currently allow for fabrication of “custom vehicles,” Village Attorney Kevin Dowd said.
The attorney said that Orange County
planners, in addition to the village, would
need to approve a zone change.
But that doesn’t deter Teutul’s plans,
Baxter said. There is another site that
