The Montgomery Town Board honored John Schmoll on Thursday with a plaque , recognizing his 41 years of service in the town .
Supervisor Mike Hayes presented the plaque , noting to the public that Schmoll had joined the town ’ s Planning Board in 1975 and served at the post until 1998 when he made the move to the Zoning Board of Appeals . For the first time since 1975 , Schmoll had asked that he not be reappointed , as he is retiring and moving away .
“ It ’ s been a great run ,” said Schmoll , a retired Walden Elementary School Principal , adding that over the years he has worked with “ a lot of great people .”
ZBA Chairman John Fallon also praised Schmoll ’ s service , expounding on his excellent service , “ intelligent insights ” and the way he treated everyone with respect and dignity .
“ Something like that is just precious ,” said Fallon . “ We love you for it and we ’ ll miss you very much .”
“ It ’ s been a pleasure ,” said Schmoll . “ Thank you all very much .”
In other business , the town board approved two transportation contracts and the reissue of the $ 30,000 line of credit for the Wallkill Valley Cemetery .
The board also held two executive sessions to discuss an update on PBA negotiations and a tax certiorari .

Now that newly-elected Assemblyman Brian Miller has wrapped up his work as Oneida County legislator , he says he wants to learn about issues in the Wallkill Valley region of his 101st District . Last week he opened an office in Shawangunk Town Hall and hired Anne Barnhardt , who had been working in a medical office , to field the tales of what ails and interests his constituents .
“ She was recommended by people there while I was campaigning ,” he said . “ She knows the community and she ’ s a go-getter .”
Barnhardt will be in the office from 9 a . m . to 1 p . m . on Wednesdays and Fridays , and Miller will visit once a month , except in March , he said .
“ I met with the township supervisor to see what his expectations are . I ’ ve been looking through newspapers , and I ’ m digesting the governor ’ s speech ,” said Miller . “ He ’ s trying to deflect the true cost of tax reductions on towns and counties . My goal is to require that state mandates be funded .”
He said he would work toward legislation for that purpose , but conceded it would be “ difficult .”
“ The governor vetoes bill like this ,” Miller said . www . HometownBankHV . com
