Greany, Barnett unopposed in Maybrook By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] Incumbents Kevin Greany and Jim Barnett will run unopposed in the Village of Maybrook board of trustees elections on March 19. Polls will be open at the Maybrook senior center, 111 Schipps Lane, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kevin Greany If re-elected, Greany will continue his work promoting and developing the Galaxy project, improve village sidewalks, and attempt to keep taxes low. The Galaxy project is a proposed industrial park on 80 acres of rail-side property that could support up to 850,000 square feet of industrial and commercial space. The project also includes an extension of Main Street over the railroad tracks, a two-mile access road parallel to the tracks with access to Henry Henning Drive in the Town of Montgomery, a pedestrian tunnel connecting downtown Maybrook and the new complex, and a two-mile hike/bike path with access to Stewart State Forest. Greany said the project will foster economic development with the promise of new jobs and will hopefully attract new families to the village. It might also attract new businesses, further spurring economic growth. Along with the board, Greany will do his part as trustee by attending meetings and assisting the developers with whatever may be needed. “That’s the number one priority on the mayor, the deputy mayor, myself and the whole board, is to get that project done,” Greany said. Greany also promises to improve village infrastructure by overseeing the completion of several sidewalk projects. He commends the village for its quality water and sewer infrastructure. He also wants to keep taxes as low as possible. “I don’t like to raise taxes on people; we try to keep it as low as possible,” Greany Jim Barnett said. “We do have arguments about it, but that’s part of the job.” A village resident for 32 years, Greany has served on the board since 2001. He said his experience on the board has taught him valuable lessons on the mechanics of village government. He also has learned how to handle issues that arise with village residents and organizations. “I learned how to handle things better and how our government works,” Greany said. Jim Barnett If re-elected, Barnett promises to continue to promote and develop the Galaxy project, promote economic growth and keep taxes affordable. Besides the obvious economic benefits, Barnett said the Galaxy project would provide valuable tax revenue for village government. He will continue to move the project along in a way that is beneficial for residents. “As a trustee, my job is to make sure all the procedures are done correctly and done with the best interest of the village residents,” Barnett said. Barnett also hopes to see more single- family homes and businesses in Maybrook in the future while keeping taxes at an affordable rate. He was appointed as a trustee in Kevin Greany December 2010. He was elected in March 2011 and is grateful to village residents and board members for their support. “I like being part of the team that we have with the other members of the board. I think we’re working very hard to move Maybrook forward,” Barnett said. “You’re running unopposed, hopefully that’s a sign that the good people are satisfied with the job I’ve done so far, and I hope I can continue to live up to their expectations.” Barnett has also served on village planning and zoning boards. He has an intimate knowledge of the mechanics of village government through his time on village boards. “Experience is always a good thing in an area where you obviously want to be,” Barnett said. He was a part-time Maybrook police officer for 34 years and he ran the department from 2005 to 2010. He has also served the scouts since 1985 and directs the Maybrook scout band. A village resident since 1976, Barnett raised his family in Maybrook and became an active member of the community. “The village is and has been an important part of my life,” Barnett said. “I love Maybrook and I hope I can continue to help the people.” State Police charge corrections officer with prison contraband A corrections officer at the Wallkill Correctional Facility has been arrested after allegedly trying to bring 64 grams of synthetic marijuana into the facility. Travon Webb, 30, of Ellenville, was arrested Feb. 25 after the discovery was made during a search of employees entering the facility. An additional search of Webb’s personal vehicle yielded another 137 grams of Synthetic marijuana. At the time of his arrest, Webb was employed as a New York State Correction Officer at the Wallkill Correctional Facility. He has since resigned from service. Webb was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth degree (felony), Prison Contraband in the First degree (felony), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh degree (misdemeanor) and Official Misconduct of a Public Servant (misdemeanor). Webb was arraigned in the Town of Shawangunk Court and remanded to Ulster County Jail in lieu of bail. He has a return date of March 18, at 6 p.m.
