Agricultural resort proposed for Bruynswick
After languishing in a field for quite
some time, a few abandoned greenhouses in the town of Shawangunk may see
new life in 2016.
The project, appropriately dubbed
“The Greenhouses,” entails the repurposing of unused greenhouses, a barn
and a garage on Bruynswick Road into
an agricultural resort.
“The interesting part was repurposing all the existing structures,” said
Doug Posey.
Posey owns the neighboring
Bruynswick Inn with his wife. He said
he kept looking over at the greenhouse
property and envisioning what it could
be. Now, together with some partners,
he is ready to move forward with his
vision—if the Shawangunk Town Board
grants a zoning change.
The property is currently zoned RAG
4, which does not allow the uses Posey is
proposing.
“You’d have to change it,” said
Shawangunk Town Supervisor John
Valk. “It doesn’t fit any way you interpret it.”
The Greenhouses would repurpose
all of the existing structures into three
conference/event spaces, a kitchen/
restaurant, 15 guest/lodging rooms, a
bar/lounge, pool/sauna and three active
greenhouses. They will not be building
any new structures.
According to Posey, the lodging
rooms will be natural and rustic with a
sustainable design using packed earth,
natural plasters and reclaimed wood.

Town of Shawangunk is
named fifth safest in state
By JANE ANDERSON
What a finished greenhouse might look like.
The Town of Shawangunk has a reason to celebrate as it rings in the New
Year: it’s been named the fifth safest
“city” in New York.
Safewise, a company that sells security systems, ranked the town among
its top 25 safest cities in the state. The
December report follows on the heels of
an announcement by Safewise in May
that ranked Shawangunk as the 66th safest city in the nation.
“We have a nice, quiet community, and
it’s nice to know we have the facts and
figures to back it up,” said Supervisor
John Valk Jr. “There’s a definite spirit
of cooperation here. We have a dedicated
police force who have their eyes and ears
wide open all the time. The people of our
community should be proud that we’re
ranked number five.”
Safewise analyzed hard numbers
to obtain the rankings. First, the most
recent FBI Crime Report statistics were
reviewed, as was population data. All
cities (or towns) that had fewer than 8,000
residents were eliminated, along with
cities that hadn’t submitted a complete
crime report to the FBI.
Safewise took the remaining cities and
