“ Troopers seemed like modern day cowboys ,” she explained .

Her passion for the police profession peaked at the state fair one year when , still a tiny tyke , she got lost .

“ My parents said , ‘ Find a police officer if you get lost .’ So I did ,” she said . “ He took me for a ride in his car to the kids ’ lost and found .”

But by the time she was in high school , the cultivated flowers in greenhouses appealed to her more than the tumbleweeds of the wild west . She began working for Corwin ’ s Florist in Warwick , where she stayed for seven years .

“ They taught me everything I know ,” Lord said .

She liked the creativity of flower arrangement and the way colors changed seasonally .

“ I like fall colors , but then fall ends and I switch to red and white , then pinks , purples , and yellows in the spring ,” she says . “ And I like the challenge . Everything ’ s in a time frame . You can ’ t be late . You have to get everything done when they need it .”

This month , Cindy Lord celebrates the 25th anniversary of Lord ’ s Homestead Florist in Maybrook .

But what makes the work worthwhile for her is the customers , she says .

“ I have really nice customers . I like interacting with them when they come in ,” says Lord . “ Some people have been coming to me for 25 years , since I started . I see a lot . Births , deaths , celebrations and sadnesses , good and bad times . I get to know people like family .”

For a decade , she held an open house around Christmas , with her father playing Santa Claus . When he died 14 years ago , she stopped having the event . But this year , for the 25th anniversary , she reinstated the event .

When Lord was 25 and just beginning her business , she said , “ Twenty-five years seemed like an eternity . But it went really fast .”
