Wallkill Valley Times , Wednesday , December 7 , 2016 Montgomery looks to provide water and sewer service to airport

Continued from page 1
For the town , the advantage of providing water and sewer resources to the airport would include adding a source of revenue and closer access to the village water system , Magryta said .
“ If the town water was built out , it could loop to the village and provide emergency access for both town and village ,” he said .
As for the airport , he said , “ Airport hangars need heavy duty sprinkler systems for fire fighting that wells can ’ t
provide . Sewer services offer proper waste management in perpetuity , while septic system life span is about 20 or 30 years , and septic fields take space .”
When the grant first became available , the town and airport failed to come to an agreement , because the town was not yet ready to extend their water system along Neelytown Rd ., said Magryta . Efforts with the village also failed because the village lacked adequate water , he said , noting that the matter had been discussed on and off since 2008 .
Hayes says the design for extending water service down
Neelytown Rd . still needs health department approval . Then the water capacity of the system would need to be reviewed to determine whether enough would be available to supply water to the airport . Sewer capacity would also need to be considered .
“ The plant is allowed only so much flow ,” said Hayes . “ But we could decide to expand the plant .”
He agreed with Magryta that the possibility of more customers and more revenue would be an advantage of the sharing of town resources with the airport .

Coalition to combat drug abuse in Pine Bush

Continued from page 1 she heard about two more lives saved by people from those trainings .
She had noticed Narcan trainings going on in Duchess County , but had not heard about any in Pine Bush , so she organized one at the Bullville Fire Department and ordered 50 Narcan kits . So many people registered that she had to arrange a second one . Over 100 people attended each event , and a total of 240 were trained . They were the largest trainings in the county , she was told by a representative from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coalition of Orange County , she said .
“ They were teachers , business people , parents , neighbors , and they were there for a reason ,” said Kahrs . “ I needed to do something . I saw other coalitions in Duchess County .”
Two months ago she gathered 15 people for a steering committee , “ key stake holders with vested interests in the community ,” she said . They include representatives

“ We just created ourselves ,” she said , calling the group “ Greater Pine Bush Partnership , including seven towns and three cities .
They have met twice so far . Their aim is a coalition resembling the PJ Pride coalition in Port Jervis , with a multi-faceted strategy for outreach .
Kahrs says she was concerned when a Pine Bush School District presentation on drug trends attracted only 25 people , especially since she had become so aware of those trends , from vaping to whip cream aerosol cans that can cause seizures for those pursuing a brief rush .
She points out the pervasiveness of the drug problem , as quantified in the U . S . Surgeon General ’ s report last week . One in seven people , 21 million in the U . S , are substance abusers , and only one in ten gets treatment . Meanwhile , an overdose death occurs every 19 minutes , she noted .
As for Greater Pine Bush Drug Coalition , she says , “ I set up the house . Now the steering committee will fill it .”
Activity plans are afoot for January , beginning with a “ listening forum ,” she says . The group has a Facebook page and twitter account , @ greaterpbp . Kahrs can be reached at greaterpbpartnership @ gmail . com .
