while also exposing kids to the animals .
Another family friendly event is the weekly dog walk on Sunday mornings , when families walk between six and 12 dogs in a park . The weekly event allows the dogs to get out of their cages while families enjoy themselves .
She said she wants to continue programs with kids because volunteering or doing events with the shelter e d u c a t e s children on the basics of pet welfare at an early age .
The shelter
Jean Buckley is also an educational resource for the community , teaching community members everything from pet ownership skills and cat and dog welfare to information on spaying and neutering .
Another priority is for dogs to visit nursing homes . Seniors are a key population and can be very helpful at the shelter , whether it be fostering animals or sitting with cats .
And Buckley hopes to continue with a program that exposes veterans to the shelter ’ s dogs and cats .
The shelter is also currently seeking approval from the town board to use

Benedict Farm Park for adoptability training , or sessions where dogs are trained basic commands to be more attractive to potential adoptees . Currently , the shelter trains its dogs in the HSW parking lot .
If those go well , Buckley said the shelter might hold adoption and community days in the park .
Buckley started volunteering in 2009 at the shelter when she found a stray cat on her doorstep . When she took it to the shelter and learned about its mission she decided to volunteer .
“ When I was there I had a first-hand look at the shelter and the work that everybody was doing and I thought to myself , ‘ I can make a difference here . I can get involved in this and really help out ’,” Buckley said .
Buckley ran for president after a senior member of the board suggested she run . She said she enjoys meeting people and reaching out to community members and organizations for the good of the shelter .
Buckley said another aspect she enjoys is seeing dogs and cats being adopted , especially senior , disabled and terminally ill animals .
“ You see the successes and that ’ s what keeps you deliriously happy ,” Buckley said .
However , the shelter has had its recent challenges . The former board president and treasurer resigned , citing internal disputes . Volunteers Kari Schreiber and Pamela O ’ Dell have been permanently suspended from the shelter following a verbal dispute O ’ Dell had with another volunteer .
“ I think those were unfortunate issues but I think it ’ s time for us to really get back to where we were , the projects we were working on and to really focus on that ,” Buckley said .
