Catholic War Vets provide overseas military personnel the comforts of home By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] The Catholic War Veterans (CWV) Post 1937 in Pine Bush offers active duty military members a little slice of home by sending care packages overseas. More than 18,000 pounds and 900 boxes have been sent to military members since CWV started the program 13 years ago. The CWV accepts toiletries and food, including soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, playing cards, socks, chap stick, baby wipes, pens, envelopes, feminine products, tea, coffee, hard candy, pringles, trail mix, cereal bars, cookies, peanuts and more. CWV treasurer Jim Gill said soldiers especially love pringles, M&Ms and Girl Scout cookies. CWV will also take monetary donations. Gill said those that wish to donate should mark the check “Soldier’s Fund”. Monetary donations are used for postage and the hall’s upkeep. Gill said the CWV can’t take anything in aerosol cans, unwrapped candy, or chocolate. Instead, Gill recommended donating individually wrapped candies or M&Ms. The CWV also accepts names and addresses of active duty members in war zones (Afghanistan, Iraq or Kuwait) and sends at least two packages to every name they receive. The soldiers must be in an active war zone for at least two more months. CWV member Ted Lewaivdowsky said the care packages provide troops with Village welcomes healing wall, honors Veterans very different than the reception of WWII veterans, who came back national heroes. “It feels long overdue,” Montgomery resident Nina Snyder said. Brescia said honoring the wall was a reminder of the sacrifice many Montgomery Vietnam veterans made. He said he is proud the village received the Wall that Heals with such a large, patriotic welcome. “It really makes you proud to be an American,” Brescia said.
