Valley Central adopts proposed
2017-18 spending plan
On Thursday, April 20, the Valley
Central Board of Education voted to
adopt the district’s proposed budget of
$101,247,326 during its regularly scheduled
meeting. The proposed budget, which
represents a 2.75% spending increase or
$1,845,191 will result in a tax levy increase
of 2.69% -- an increase which is within the
district’s legal limit as defined by New
York’s tax levy cap legislation.
“The administration worked diligently
to ensure that our spending plan
preserves all of our existing programs
and adds critical positions to ensure
that we are meeting all of our students’
needs,” Superintendent of Schools John
Xanthis said.
The proposed budget maintains all
current programs and positions, while
increasing educational opportunities
and support for students through the
creation of new part-time positions or
expansion of existing positions including
occupational and physical therapists,
a tech teacher, team leaders at the
elementary and middle school level and
hall monitors for the athletic department.
It also creates special education classes
at the middle school, ensuring that the
district can meet the needs of some of
its special education without the need of
outside services.
Valley Central has entered into a
five-year contract with East End Bus
Company to provide transportation for
the students.
The budget vote will be held on May
16, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Valley
Central High School gymnasium. Voters
must be U.S. citizens, a resident of the
district for 30 days or more, 18 years old
as of May 16, 2017 and registered with
the County Board of Elections. Residents
who are not registered may register to
vote by attending Valley Central’s voter
registration day on May 11, from 1 to 8 p.m.
at the district’s Central Office, located at
944 State Route 17K, Montgomery, New
York. Applications for absentee ballots
are available from the district clerk.
