Last month I introduced you to WHOA ’ s Happy Trails Program and suggested a few tips that might come in handy on or off the trail . This program is open to any registered gaited horse . The owner and rider must be a WHOA member in good standing each year of participation . Basically those are the requirements . You may ride in a group , on an organized ride or by yourself to accrue hours . When one reaches a plateau in the program you notify the WHOA Office to receive the prize for that level . You might as well reap the rewards

while you enjoy the outdoors on your smooth gaited horse . Get the most out of your upcoming rides . Enroll in the WHOA Happy Trails Program today and start getting your riding time recognized .
Make sure your horse ’ s vaccinations are up to date and he has been dewormed . Talk to a veterinarian about diseases specific to the part of the country where you will be riding . You will need a current Coggins to ride in any area . It is a good idea to have them laminated or put in a clear plastic sleeve and carry a set in your vehicle and one in your saddle bags . Know how to monitor your horse ’ s vital signs and be able to administer first-aid to both horse and humans if needed . Don ’ t over do it ! Let your horse rest and walk after periods of gaiting or climbing rough terrain . Always be aware of your surroundings and think ahead so you don ’ t put yourself or your horse in a dangerous situation . Try to know the depth of a water crossing before attempting to cross it . At a water crossing it is good to let your horse drink but be aware that if it starts pawing and turning in

circles chances are you are about to get wet as the horse is going to lay down ! Pick his head up , kick him and head for dry ground !!!! Never let a hot horse drinks its fill . Let it drink , then rest a bit and let it drink a small bit more as too much water will cause colic and other problems that might result in death .
Enjoy your ride but be sensible and take care of you and your horse . Make sure to cool your horse down properly to relieve and prevent lactic acid buildup in the muscles . My Dad , who always gave me good advice told me time and time again “ Sis walk the last mile home .” Not only will this cool your horse out but it will teach the horse that it cannot rush back to the trailer or stable . Letting the horse go back to the stable or trailer at a fast gait will just teach it to rush , hurry and eventually to run home whether you want to or not . This can be a seriously bad habit . Enjoy your happy hours in the saddle and collect neat awards as you ride .
