1940-1950 post war
In the 1950s, the war ended and a shortage of jobs occured. Many women were expected to go back home to care for their families again. The economy boomed because of the war, most family had cars and television, thirty-five percent of women went to college, and forty-six percent had jobs. Even though that is the case, most women still earned only sixty percent of what men earned and there were still many struggles to overcome.
The women at home typically wanted to go back to wearing skirts and dresses. They wore the designs of Christian Dior which were feminine but at the same time ankle length and shorter than what it was before. On the other hand, women who worked tend to wear the classic, affordable and easy to maintain suits by Coco Chanel.
