T H E O V E R V I E W T H E THE AMURI BASIN The Amuri Basin is bound by the Hurunui and Waiau Rivers and comprises an area of approximately 57,000 hectares of flat, or virtually flat, land. The Hurunui District - of which the Amuri Basin forms the dominant part with 73 of the total 90 dairy herds - leads the nation in both per hectare and per cow production. AMURI IRRIGATION COMPANY LIMITED With an annual rainfall of just over 600mm (24 inches), the productivity of the Basin was restricted by the hot dry Canterbury summers. Most of the irrigation infrastructure was created in the early 1980’s and was designed for border-dyke irrigation for intensive sheep and beef production. Initially, it watered just 12,200 hectares but currently provides water to 23,100 hectares, of which 60% is dairy platforms, 25% dairy support and just 15% sheep, beef, deer and cropping. By September 2017 the scheme will be piped providing pressurised water for spray irrigation, predominantly via centre O F F E R I N G pivots. The cost of water is anticipated to be about $300 per irrigated hectare providing about 5mm of precipitation per day throughout the season. • Land and Buildings - 8 Dairy Farms - 115ha bareland runoff THE WAIBURY GROUP • Stock, Plant and Equipment The Waibury Group mission statement is “To develop and operate efficient, profitable dairy farms to increase shareholder wealth and returns through superior dairy farm management.” • Fonterra Shares The Waibury Group will be sold with the existing equity operators of each dairy unit in place, which under the present structure, a new owner would have an approximately 86% share of the Group. Waibury Group effectively began on 1 June 2000 with the purchase of three farms. The Group since its inception has had a goal of creating modern, well spec’d dairy farms which consistently perform at a high level. The infrastructure, facilities and management of the group attract high-calibre farm employees and the group operates a model that incorporates key staff as equity operators on specific properties. There is a separate management company, Total Management Services Limited, which could continue into the future, or help a new owner transition into the Group if required. The strategic investment and management excellence have resulted in flagship farms clearly identifiable by their quality improvements and performance which are driven by high levels of pride and the team culture engendered by the Waibury Group.
