ills that can turn you into a hero in extreme situations that can save the life er your inner hero with these life-saving skills! Starting a Fire Since the dawn of time, fire has been the number one most useful resource. Besides cooking with it, you can boil water for safe drinking, use it to build tools, and use it to keep warm or fend off predators. There are many different ways to build a fire but there are a few basic things that you will need no matter which method you choose. 1. Find kindle. Can’t start a fire without something to burn! First, start by finding small dry twigs or nest material to use as a kindle. This is what you will use to catch the flame since it is material that will easily go ablaze. 2. Once you have your kindle gathered, you will need to find larger logs. This is what is going to keep your fire going long and hard. 3. Once all basic wood material is gathered, start by clearing an area free of debris. You don’t want anything else catching fire by accident so clear a large area and if possible, surround it by stone to help keep the fire contained. 4. After the area is clear of debris, it is time to build the fire. Start by putting the kindle in a close-knit pile in the center, and then place the larger logs around it. Be sure that you don’t pack things too tightly! You want there to be some airflow to help the fire breathe. 5. The last and final step is lighting the fire! There are a few different ways to do this depending on your situation. If you have a lighter or matches, USE IT! Light a piece of wood or cloth to help protect you from the flame and light the kindle in the center of the fire. If you don’t have a lighter or match, try finding two flat stones or flint to create a spark by striking them together. If you have glasses, use those with the sun to create a fixed point within the center of the kindle. This will NOT be instant so patience is key.. 15
