Start with yourself and do a quick wellness check to ensure you don’t have any injuries. Once you are all clear take a look around you and assess the stability of others. If you find someone that is injured, first shout for help in case there are any emergency personnel nearby. After that, remember your A, B, Cs. A is for Airway. Check to see if the person’s airway is obstructed by the tongue, fluid, debris or swelling. You can do this by tilting their head back and with your thumb open the mouth. B is for Breathing. Once you know the airway is clear, check to see if the person is breathing. If you find they are not, move on to C immediately C is for Chest Compressions. This is when you would want to start the CPR process. Heimlich Maneuver Heimlich Maneuver is the recommended treatment to stop choking. Here are some easy steps to help you remember how it is done. 1. Stand behind the person and place both arms around leaning them forward, 2. Then perform up to five (5) abdominal thrusts. Continue the cycle until the foreign object is dislodged. Note: This is for choking adults only. 14
