Name: Alvaro Voelker Class: 2009 University: Syracuse University Major: Sport Management
How would you describe your college experience? It was an unbelievable experience, everything I expected it to be. The fastest and best four years of my life.
What was the hardest thing / class / experience for you? The hardest thing for me was definitely the language during my first weeks on campus. My English was on point when it came down to schoolwork and writing papers, but it was a different story in a social environment. I was not used to speaking English all the time, socially I always speak Spanish, never really spoke English at school besides at a class presentation or when Sr. Lilia was around.
Were you part of any clubs? I was part of the Sport Management club, and part of Syracuse University Men’ s Soccer team, as their manager.
Did you study abroad? I never had the chance to“ study” a semester abroad. I had two abroad experiences, I took an Olympic class, which was a threeweek class in Europe, and we traveled to London, Paris, Greece, and Switzerland going through different Olympic sites. My second experience is that at the moment I’ m interning with Adidas in their Brand Marketing department at Adidas HQ in Germany.
What will you do next? I ask myself that every day, I still don’ t know. I will apply for jobs and other internships in August, then work or intern for a year, and apply for grad school for 2014, but nothing set at the moment.
What is your favorite college memory? Working with the Syracuse University Men’ s Soccer team. I was their manager for three years, and my favorite memory is that we were the second team in school history to ever make it to the National tournament, and first team to reach the Sweet Sixteen, and after two awful years and being disregarded by everyone in the country, ending up our season as the # 17th team in the country was a great feeling.
What tips would you give to a VMCHS graduating Senior who is about to embark in their college journey? Enjoy yourself, don’ t take school too seriously, obviously work hard and get good grades, but have fun doing it because time flies.
Anything else you would like to mention: I just want to thank all my professors who helped me get where I’ m at- Ms. Ana, Mr. Contreras, Mr. Jacobelli, Mrs. Carreno, Sr. Lilia, Mrs. O. Mr. Eddie, Mano, Sra. Guillen, Mrs. Valenzuela, Ms. Guilin, Mrs. Gallego and especially Mrs. Ramirez who was always there to help me, and guide me through the college process.
