Club Spotlight
( continued )
Ocean Lakes Junior Classical League , continued
This school year , our club also has put a big emphasis on community service . We volunteered to give out food at a food bank and created a friendly competition for elementary school students to get exposure to Latin at an early age , which , we hope , will increase their chances to choose Latin as their language of choice ( students choose their language in middle school or 5th grade ).
In our competition , we had the elementary school students create a picture book about Greek / Roman mythology , the day in the life of a gladiator , or a variety of other topics . All of the students who participate in the competition will get their book translated into Latin . We will also rank their stories , and the top 3 will get common children books like the Cat in the Hat that are translated into Latin . This competition is running ongoing right now . We are so excited to see their entries and give them their stories back once they are translated into Latin !
This school year , our chapter here at Ocean Lakes is leading the way to build a strong and large Latin community here in the Tidewater area . We will continue our efforts into the future and keep fighting to increase participation in the language and culture that we love .
