King Phineus and the Harpies
The Argonauts stopped in Phineus's court in Salmydessus, Thrace to get directions to Colchis. Having been cursed by Zeus to eat only the leftovers of harpies (pictured above right), the king agreed to instruct them, so long as they got rid of the monsters.
The Clashing Rocks
The Clashing Rocks were two huge cliffs that crushed any ship passing between them. King Phineus had advised Jason on how to pass them: Jason had to let a dove fly first between the rocks: if it lived, the Argo would make it through if they rowed with all their might.
