Interview with 1st Vice President

Douglas Griffin

School: Wakefield Country Day

Grade: 11th

Level of Latin: AP Latin

Nickname: Douglas "Lit" Griffin

How many conventions have you been to?

I've been to 9 Conventions: 5 state and 4 national.

When did you know you wanted to become a VJCL Officer?

This summer at the Governor’s Latin academy, when I really saw how many people in the community weren’t part of the JCL, even though they took Latin. I wanted to try and fix that by running for 1st VP.

Outside of the Classics, what’s your favorite thing to do?

I really enjoy learning anything. I like reading, I like languages, I just like learning in general.

What are your ambitions as VJCL 1st VP?’

I want to make the JCL more accessible; I feel it can be difficult to get involved with, even esoteric. I want to make sure they’re having a good time, I want them to tell their friends “yo this JCL thing is cool come back” instead of “I’m just doing this for my college resume” or “my mom’s making me go”

What have you found difficult about your job so far?

I don’t what I can do or what I can’t do. I don’t know if I’m allowed to send emails out to certain people, just where my job ends and the State Chairs’ begins.

What’s the best thing about being an Officer?

It’s nice getting a look at the internal workings of the JCL.

Switch roles with another officer, who would it be and why?

I’d say the 2nd VP, but there currently is none. I really like crafty things and I think it’d be really fun to come up with all the Spirit stuff, but the work involved with that prohibits you from a lot of stuff, so I’m definitely happy with the position I have.

If you had to have an official officer animal, which animal would it be, what would you name it and why.

I think it’d probably be an Octopus because I like Octopi. They’re very versatile and very smart. I’d name it Xanthippus because that’s just a really cool name.
