Interview with Parliamentarian
Kashi Nikore
How many conventions have you been to?
5 VJCL and 0 national. I will be at the next national convention!
When did you know you wanted to become a VJCL Officer?
My first year at convention, I was in 7th grade and there was this kid speaking and I thought this would be a perfect job for me. My dad works in politics and I had always been super active and enjoyed parliamentary procedure.
Outside of the Classics, what’s your favorite thing to do?
I participate in a lot of extracurriculars for school. For example, I’m an officer in my school’s DECA Chapter, I run Young Democrats, I work at the Newseum. I just try to be active in the DC-NOVA area.
What are your ambitions as VJCL Parliamentarian?
The platform I originally ran on was that, my school is very big at around 2500 kids. However, our jcl is very small. I want to let people know that even though your school or chapter is small, you can still run for positions. I want to help kids figure out what positions they want to run for and see how they can affect the VJCL.
What have you found difficult about your job so far?
I didn’t have the “honeymoon” period after convention where I got to ease into the job. Instead it was immediately, OMG WE NEED TO FIND A SECOND VP. It’s not easy finding a willing, qualified candidate.
Switch roles with another officer, who would it be and why?
I’d switch with Merritt. Imagine yourself as Merritt walking around in convention and he gets to be so laid back. He was mentioning how he was 12 kids’ facebook profile photos and a couple people’s instagram. I guess I’m kinda jealous that he gets to make connections with all JCLers instead of just JCLers who were interested in running for an office. The interactivity is very appealing to me.
What’s the best thing about being an Officer?
I like the interaction I get to have with potential candidates and helping them to shape their role in the JCL.
If you had to have an official officer animal, which animal would it be what would you name it and why.
I’m really scared of birds, but maybe an Eagle because it represents parliamentary procedure. OMG A ZEBRA. It’s definitely a zebra bc everything is black and white just like for a parliamentarian, no gray area. I would name the zebra I have absolutely no idea. I’d just name it zee the zebra.
*Personally I’d go with Robert as in Robert’s rules of order*
