Alexander Smith has been a faithful servant of the Virginia Junior Classical League and its constituents for the better part of his life. That being said, it would seem that Mr. Smith is having a hard time...letting go. Both figuratively and literally. When asked by incoming President Alyssa Funai to hand over the gavel, he refused to release it from his grasp, referring to the gavel as his "precious." Mr. Smith then preceded to rattle off the well known inscription on the side of the gavel: "Whosoever wields this gavel, if he(or she) be worthy, shall possess the power of VJCL President." When he was escorted from the premises, Mr. Smith added that he would be back and surely enough he was there at the Winter planning meeting. At the meeting, although the temperature outside was subzero, Mr. Smith refused to put on any form of outerwear. He defended this choice by stating, “the cold never bothered me anyway.” Mr. Smith became increasingly vocal throughout the meeting and refused to acknowledge Ms. Funai's adjournment, citing his dominion over the VJCL. When attempts were made to persuade him to leave along with the rest of us, he simply said, “Here I stand, and here I stay.” Some say he's still standing there to this day.
