Editor’s Note
T
his year’s NJCL convention very well
may have been the best I’ve attended.
For me, among seeing “Old Town Road”
flawlessly performed in Latin, trying out Greek
with the distinguished Dr. Sangco-Jackson, and
witnessing the first ever “All-Visuals” round
of the World Series of Certamen, 2019 was a
highlight reel of what an NJCL convention
should be like. And let us not forget Virginia’s
two spirit wins and the election of our very
own Jocelyn Robertson to the position of NJCL
President!
In Fargo, Virginia showed that our future is
bright. Embodying this idea were the VJCLers
who participated in the Certamen Open Forum.
At this event hosted by the excellent Certamen
Chair Magistra Luongo, and the valuable,
once-yearly conversation’s focused on how the
game can attract more players through some
bold changes.
The Executive Board and co-chairs took note
of these new ideas, and as a result, there will
be a Certamen discamus session at this year’s
VJCL Convention.
My highlights from this year were all events
new to me, I noticed. I appreciate that the
JCL (and indeed, the VJCL), has such a strong
foundation that it is able to try new things
without relying on nostalgia for old traditions.
(Nevertheless, know that I will be devastated
if “Brown Squirrel” permanently disappears
from “That’s Entertainment”.)
I’m going to be trying new things soon, as my
time with you all is almost up. I see my term
ending like a drawling 10 o’clock sunset over the
wide, wide western hills of North Dakota. I’m
excited to see what the VJCL can do both next
year and for years to come.
After my term ends, catch me lying peacefully
in an endless sea of native grassland for the next
ten to twenty years, thinking of the memories
I’ve made with you all.
Sincerely,
Cal Lucido
