Orthodontic treatment typically runs around 18 months, though the timeline varies significantly by case complexity and— critically— patient compliance. There are now more options than ever for how that treatment is delivered.
Traditional metal The most effective for complex cases, most durable, and most affordable. More visible, but normalised— a large proportion of teenagers have them at any given time.
Ceramic braces Tooth-coloured brackets that are far less visible than metal. Similar effectiveness; slightly more fragile. Popular with teens who are conscious about appearance.
Invisalign Teen Clear removable aligners changed every few weeks. Nearly invisible; can be removed for eating. Requires discipline— must be worn 22 hours a day for results.
Oral hygiene with braces requires significantly more time and effort than without. Plaque accumulates around brackets and under wires, and inadequate cleaning causes white spot lesions— permanent chalky patches on the enamel around each bracket that become visible when the braces come off. They are a sign of early decay and they are permanent. Preventing them requires interproximal brushes to clean around the brackets, careful attention to the gumline, and ideally a water flosser to clean under the wire. Meticulous is not an overstatement.
