We were delighted that over 220 churches responded to the call last year to hold a ‘ Disability Awareness Sunday ’. A whole range of services took place across all sorts of different churches and groups in the UK .
It was particularly exciting to hear of disabled people being asked to share their own personal stories as part of Disability Awareness Sunday . We received lots of comments such as this one from a church in Lancashire : “ A member of our congregation who has Cerebral Palsy did a talk which was so inspiring and helped others to see the obstacles that he faces on a daily basis .”

church could join in . They told the story of the paralysed man being lowered through the roof and created a ‘ roof ’ on the platform , representing some of the barriers facing disabled people in church today .
It ’ s wonderful to see disability awareness being raised in so many imaginative ways , and we encourage even more churches to join in this year .
Could your church join in ? Disability Awareness Sunday 2023 will be on Sunday 17th September ( or , if that ’ s already booked , pick a date of your choice .)
The existing resources based on Luke 5:17 – 26 will continue to be available , and for 2023 there will be a new video featuring Ashleigh Milroy , one of our disabled Roofbreakers in Scotland , who gives us the message that : “ It ' s so important to use the gifts that God ' s given you , as you , not as the person that you think you need to be .”
We hope you will plan a date to have a Disability Awareness Sunday service , or part of a service , in your church . Get in touch to register your interest so that the resources can be sent out to you nearer the time – email info @ throughtheroof . org or ring 01372 749955 .
