After the visit, we went inside the Lovers’ Mausoleum to learn about the story of Isabel de Segura and Diego de Marcilla. We saw their mummies, and acted out Teruel’s most famous love story In Teruel a young man called Diego de Marcilla fell in love with Isabel de Segura. Her father had no other daughters and was very rich. Diego and Isabel were very much in love, and he told her that, since her father refused him because he was poor, she would have to wait five years while he went away to make his fortune, She promised to wait. Five years later, Isabel’s father told her she should marry. Because more than five years had passed without news from Diego, she agreed. She was soon married, and during the wedding celebrations, Diego reappeared. The young man approached Isabel’s bed and said to her ‘Kiss me or I’ll die!’ She replied that she couldn’t because she was married, so Diego died. Isabel wanted to kiss Diego before he was buried, so at the funeral she kissed him with such passion and sadness that she died too. The group at the Lovers’ Mausoleum After this interesting visit, there was still time to wander around the streets of Teruel, have ice-cream, take photos and get to know the locals. At the end of a long day, we walked back to our accommodation for a well-needed rest.
