SITKA ARTISTS
Pat Kehoe, a founding member of the gallery, often paints directly from her boat, capturing the fluidity of the water and the ever-changing landscape in her work. Another longtime feature artist, Norm Campbell, focuses on the intricate details of the forest and mountains surrounding Sitka, using pen and ink to bring out the unique personalities of the trees and wildlife.
Young artists also bring new energy to the co-op, adding to the community that keeps the gallery alive. Local Tlingít beader Cayla McCutcheon and recent Sitka transplant and painter Brittany Jones use life in Southeast Alaska as their inspiration. McCutcheon describes Sitka as“ a true artist community” and Jones mentions that,“ Living in Sitka has been an absolute dream as an artist. There is such an abundance of magic whenever you step outside here, whether it’ s hiking the huge ridgelines, walking through the forest, or beachcombing.”
GALLERIES
Other Sitka galleries also offer a variety of art. At Artist Cove Gallery, you’ ll find pottery, prints of local landmarks, and Alaska Native jewelry. X’ út’ aa Hídi, an Alaska Native-owned gallery, showcases Indigenous culture through hand-carved masks, woven baskets, and jewelry.
Artists in Sitka use their mediums as a reflection of the landscapes, culture, and spirit of our island home. When you step into a gallery, take a moment to explore the stories each piece tells.
And if a particular work speaks to you, don’ t hesitate to take it home. Supporting local artists not only brings a piece of Sitka with you, but keeps the creative heart of our community beating.
