TRAIL ALONG WITH LOCALS
Sitka Trail Works is a local organization that has been making a positive impact in Sitka since the mid-90s. The nonprofit originally formed to help employ workers after the closure of the local sawmill; Sitka Trail Works played an important role in helping Sitka thrive on the appreciation and stewardship of nature.
Today, Sitka Trail Works serves both locals and visitors by developing an expansive trail system, offering guided educational hikes, and engaging volunteers to help keep our trail systems in excellent condition. When you head out for a hike on one of our trails, you’ re walking through paths maintained by people who care deeply about making the outdoors accessible.
Regeneration plays a huge role in Sitka’ s identity. As Hughey explains,“ The Lingít people have been caring for this land since time immemorial, and our town continues to rely on these lands for our way of life. Being mindful of how we use our resources, care for the land, and reduce waste is crucial.”
Cora Dow
“ In the rainforest, everything erodes quickly, so many of the structures on our trails need regular upkeep. By getting involved, visitors can truly connect with the land in a meaningful way and contribute to the long-term sustainability of these natural spaces.”— Ben Hughey, Executive Director of Sitka Trail Works

REGENERATE YOUR VISIT: However you choose to get involved, we encourage you to embrace the slower pace of life here— smile at the people you pass on the trails, say hello to shop owners, and take a moment to appreciate the land and people around you. There are also simple ways to make a positive impact during your visit to Sitka. Staying on the trails, following Leave No Trace principles, or hiring a local guide are just a few ways to participate.
