SITKA SOUND SCIENCE CENTER
Located next to a hatchery on the outskirts of downtown , the Sitka Sound Science Center provides guests of all ages with unique learning opportunities . From an aquatic touch tank to an orca whale skeleton suspended from the rafters , this is a must-see location for even the most seasoned scientists . One of the goals of the Science Center is to ignite a passion for science in all levels of learners , which is why they also offer special resources like field guides for beachcombing and Science in Place ( SiP ) kits , which are backpacks filled with activities , crafts , and experiments for the indoors and outdoors . Another option , Science Bites , allows families to read about the animals and projects at the aquarium and hatchery as well as research projects and explore free online activities . Round out your visit with a trip to their gift shop , which sells locally made goods and food , Science Center apparel , and ocean-themed gifts .
FORTRESS OF THE BEAR
Visitors can also get an up-close look at some of Sitka ’ s bears and birds of prey by visiting one of our animal rehabilitation centers . We share our home with brown bears , bald eagles , and all five species of Pacific salmon . At the Fortress of the Bear , guests get a front row seat in watching rescued bears play , eat , and interact in a natural habitat .
ALASKA RAPTOR CENTER
The Alaska Raptor Center provides a sanctuary for injured birds in hopes of recovery and release of them back into the wild ; guests can even measure their own wingspan while visiting .
Both rehabilitation centers work closely with experts in their fields to provide safe living environments for animals in need and educational experiences for guests .
