Salty waters surround the private island , the waves lapping against the shoreline . As a cool ocean breeze moves through the towering Sitka spruce trees , guests of Talon Lodge & Spa inhale with intention , a true sense of calm washing over them .
The lodge , an adventure resort and spa , sits on an 8-acre island just a short 15-minute boat ride from Sitka . With open-air facilities and floor-to-ceiling windows , it sets the stage for breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding islands , allowing for an immersive Alaska experience .
That ’ s just what owners Phil and Gwen Younger wanted when they first stepped foot on the island — a place for visitors to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of Alaska like it was a theatrical performance . The two said it was love at first sight . “ Within 15 seconds of first landing on the beach , we had already decided to get really stupid and start building ,” Phil remembers with a laugh .
Though their history with Sitka dates back many years , with Gwen being born and raised in the town , it wasn ’ t until 2003 that they stumbled upon the private island while visiting Gwen ’ s sister . At the time , a few commercial fishermen owned it and used it as a home base for their fishing trips . However , after listing it for sale , it was clear the Youngers ’ vision was what would help this island reach its full potential . “ We set out to create something different , not a fish camp , because Sitka already had flourishing fishing lodges and camps that were well established and well operated . Our goal with Talon was not to compete with them , but to take this beautiful island , which is such a destination , and merge it with everything Sitka has to offer — kayaking , hiking , ATV tours , hot springs , whale watching . We wanted to bring in everything the ‘ Alaska theater ’ has to offer with resort-service standards .” And that ’ s just what they did .
