Reducing
Plastics
Last year, Maryland-based
hotel brand Marriott
International committed to
replacing the small disposable
toiletries in its rooms with
larger or wall-mounted
amenities. The worldwide
initiative is set to be complete
by December and will save an
estimated 1.7 million pounds of
plastic each year.
Harbor’s Ecosystem
Scientists at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology,
based along the Harbor, collaborate with the Maryland Sea Grant
and the National Aquarium to study and create baseline data on the
Harbor’s ecosystem, biodiversity and water quality, with the goal
of better understanding how urban environments and shorelines
impact marine health.
Oyster Restoration
The Great Baltimore Oyster Partnership, a collaboration between the
Healthy Harbor Initiative and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, involves
planting 200,000 baby oysters in designated locations in the Harbor
each year between October and June. After nine months, the matured
oysters are hand-harvested and moved to a protected sanctuary in the
Patapsco River, which feeds into the Inner Harbor. This helps preserve
the Bay’s native oyster population while training volunteers to educate
their communities on water pollution and health.
Mr. Trash Wheel is a trash
interceptor that uses a blend
of sustainable solar and hydro
power to pull hundreds of
tons of trash from the water
each year. The collected trash
is incinerated to generate
electricity. Mr. Trash Wheel’s
largest collection in a single
day: 38,000 lbs.
