Ministry of
Brewing
In Upper Fell’s Point, huge stainless-steel
brewing tanks sit in the old sanctuary
of St. Michael the Archangel Church. It’s
part of a reinvention that turned an 1852
church where German immigrants once
worshipped into a beer brewery called
Ministry of Brewing. The project, which
opened in the fall, retains the soaring
vaulted ceilings and replaces the pews
with beer hall-style tables made from wood
reclaimed from within the church; the
grand columns and a mural on the ceiling
are restored. And confl icted religious beer
lovers can relax: Before the property was
sold, its religious leaders de-sanctifi ed it
for secular use.
