American
Ice Building
Once a stately landmark of West Baltimore
but abandoned for decades and badly
damaged in a 2004 fi re, this 1908 ice house
was purchased by a regional developer in
2016 with the intent to re-envision the space
as an arts and entertainment project, with
a beer garden, arts incubator, gallery, and
a 100,000-sqare-foot outdoor courtyard
intended to host concerts, festivals and
private events. It’s an attempt to bring
investment to a part of town in need of
attention and support, with hopes of creating
jobs, adding community amenities and
spurring additional redevelopment nearby.
The developer plans to invest nearly $19
million in renovating the property, assisted
by nearly $2.5 million in tax credits from the
Maryland Historical Trust.
