GUNTHER & CO .
Once one of the largest brewing centers in the country ( producing 800,000 barrels a year ), Gunther Brewing Company closed its plant for good in the late 1970s . In the early aughts , the long-closed industrial building was updated and renovated to become The Gunther , a nationally recognized historic site and mixed-use development project featuring chic apartments and retail stores . The complex ’ s restaurant , Gunther & Co ., highlights a local , seasonal modern American menu in a stunning space that includes a 16-foot living plant wall .

MINISTRY OF BREWING
Talk about a reinvention : In Upper Fell ’ s Point , huge stainless-steel beer brewing tanks sit in the sanctuary of St . Michael the Archangel Church , an 1852 church where German immigrants once worshiped . Ministry of Brewing retained the soaring vaulted ceilings and replaced the pews with beer hall-style tables made from wood reclaimed from within the church ; the grand columns and a mural on the ceiling are restored . And beer lovers can sip comfortably knowing religious leaders de-sanctified the property for secular use before it was transformed .
