FREDERICK DOUGLASS-ISAAC MYERS MARITIME PARK MUSEUM
A national heritage site , this park and museum honors the legacy of the African Americans who worked in Baltimore ’ s shipyards in the 1800s and 1900s and tells the stories of community leaders and reformers Frederick Douglass and Isaac Myers , who both worked as caulkers there . Situated along the water in historic Fell ’ s Point , the space features an elegant industrial aesthetic , floor-to-ceiling windows and a brick courtyard overlooking the Baltimore harbor .
THE NATIONAL GREAT BLACKS IN WAX MUSEUM
This singular wax figure museum , which chronicles cles African American history , is the brainchild of local couple Drs . Elmer and Joanne Martin , who launched the small museum in downtown Baltimore in the early 1980s after spending their savings on 21 wax figures . Within the decade , they had received enough visitors and funding to open a 30,000-square-foot museum in buildings that were once a firehouse , a Victorian mansion and two former apartment dwellings . The museum now features more than 100 wax figures and scenes , including a slave ship exhibit and a Maryland room spotlighting the contributions of outstanding African Americans from across the state . A powerful and important Baltimore landmark , this museum um hosts more than 200,000 visitors every year .
