FROM VISION TO VINYL
Baltimore’ s sound couldn’ t be manufactured— it had to be found.
That was the premise behind the original track titled“ From the B-Side,” a collaboration between Visit Baltimore and local musicians to create an anthem that reflects Charm City through its community voices.
The process began with an in-person workshop, where the musicians used a sonic-branding framework adapted for Baltimore to define its energy, rhythm and emotional pulse. In the end, samples from artists including Black Assets, Brandon Woody, Ducky Dynamo, Chloe Smith, Jay R Neutron, Jeremiah Thompson and John Tyler were chosen to be part of the track.
Field recordists then captured the city’ s everyday texture: snowball machines, marble stoop scrubbing, the Light Rail and even the shouting of“ O!” during the National Anthem at Camden Yards. These sounds were woven together with original artist tracks to form a layered, two-minute composition.
The finished song was pressed into a limited-edition 45 speed vinyl record with cover art designed by The Globe at MICA, giving the anthem a physical, collectible form true to its record-flip concept.
The track was then used to anchor a commercial, distilled into 30- and 15-second spots narrated by Carmelo Anthony and produced in partnership with Wide Angle Youth Media, deliberate choices that kept the storytelling rooted in real Baltimore voices.
The result: a campaign built by the city, for the city.
