“ I loved it when the children from Italy showed us how they made bird feeders from water bottles.”
“ We did a quiz together and laughed a lot, even though we didn’ t speak the same language.”
“ I spoke English for the first time with other people, and they understood me! It felt great.”
These experiences boosted students’ digital and language skills, while also fostering cooperation and intercultural awareness. They discovered that meaningful communication and collaboration are possible even with linguistic and cultural differences— a key goal of global education( UNESCO, 2017).
From theory to action: Learning by doing The project inspired students to take initiative both at school and at home. They created posters, videos, presented their ideas to classmates, and took part in hands-on activities that made sustainability fun and relevant.
“ I made so many creations from shoe boxes, even at home.”
" I didn’ t know that aluminium could be recycled. When we made the recycling bin in our classroom, we all started recycling it. We even made a bet to fill it up by the end of the school year!"
“ The most special moment was going outside the school to clean the river area all together!”
These actions cultivated a sense of personal responsibility and showed students that they can be agents of change in their own environments. Such empowerment lies at the heart of education for sustainable development, where values, attitudes, and actions are developed through participation and reflection( UNESCO, 2020).
