Developing Skills for Life Through Project-Based Media Literacy by Aliona Meriacre
Alina Ștefania Lazăr is a Mathematics teacher at the Forestry Technological High School in Râmnicu Vâlcea, Romania. She is also an eTwinning ambassador and project coordinator with experience in STEAM and European collaborative projects.
The increasing complexity of digital information environments underscores the importance of integrating media literacy into school education to equip students with essential life skills. This article presents the implementation of F. A. K. E. – Fact. Act. Know. Empower. project, an international eTwinning initiative carried out by partner schools from Moldova, Slovakia, and Türkiye.
Integrating media literacy into English language teaching through project-based, collaborative, and inquiry-based learning, the project engaged students in researching contemporary media issues, designing educational games and awareness campaigns, creating digital learning content, and organising community engagement activities. The findings indicate that these authentic learning experiences strengthened students ' critical thinking, media and digital literacy, communication in English, collaboration, creativity, and civic engagement. The project demonstrates the educational value of interdisciplinary and international collaboration in developing versatile life skills, while offering practical approaches for integrating media literacy into language and citizenship education.
