Historical Background of eTwinning in Greece The eTwinning initiative was launched in 2005 by the European Commission as part of European educational policies promoting digital cooperation among schools. Its main objectives were to strengthen European school partnerships, integrate ICT into education, promote intercultural understanding, and develop students’ digital and collaborative skills.
In Greece, eTwinning quickly became a major educational initiative. Teachers participated in thousands of projects, developed digital competencies and created international collaborations with schools throughout Europe.
The expansion of the programme generated new professional needs. Teachers required additional communication channels through which they could find project partners, exchange ideas, share educational materials and receive support from experienced colleagues.
Although official eTwinning platforms provided institutional support, informal teacher networks gradually emerged. Social media, particularly Facebook, offered an accessible environment for these interactions.
Establishment and Development of the eTwinning Greece Facebook Community The eTwinning Greece Facebook Community was established in 2012 by Greek educators who were friends of and supporters of the eTwinning programme.
The creation of the community represented a grassroots educational initiative. Teachers themselves identified the need for a common digital space where colleagues could communicate freely, exchange experiences and strengthen collaboration.
From its beginning, the community functioned independently as a professional network with educational purposes. Its main objectives were to support teachers interested in eTwinning, facilitate collaboration among schools, promote innovative teaching practices, disseminate successful projects and encourage participation in European educational activities.
The community has progressively developed into a large professional learning environment.
The community is called eTwinning Greece and was established in 2012 as an independent initiative led by teachers. It is connected with the wider eTwinning educational community and is administered by me.
