Biodiversity Appreciation, to develop a deep appreciation and understanding of species, ecosystems, and the interconnectedness of the living world to prevent mismanagement and destruction.
But how did this journey in the European nature begin? To enhance a sustainability mindset, helping students to develop competences, empathy, responsibility and care for our planet, the partners teachers shared the project Core Objectives, based on a“ learning by doing” path, engaging pupils to explore and learn about nature in the local neighbourhood, to share and compare knowledge with international project partners, to recognize global environmental issues, to develop simple, creative solutions using scientific thinking methods and to take social environmental responsibility.
The project process was oriented to three main aims:
• Wellbeing, to foster the mental and physical well-being of students through hands-on outdoor learning.
• Eco-Literacy, to“ rewild " the next generation through improved ecological literacy and direct involvement in nature projects.
The project included an integrated range of pedagogical approaches that supported motivation and the development of social skills, promoting critical thinking, creativity, and proaction. The context of outdoor education facilitated the knowledge of natural aspects and promoted awareness and responsibility towards environmental sustainability.
The organization of activities in both local and international groups, through Collaborative Learning and Project Based Learning, fostered the reinforcement of social skills and the ability to work together, to open up to cultural diversity, to assume roles within the group, sharing objectives and choices, so enhancing organizational skills and critical thinking. Moreover, the project path promoted the participation and protagonism of the students, who felt Sustainability Ambassadors.
