Picturebooks that Give Voice to Europe’ s Children by Mary Nacca and Flavia Cruciani
Picturebooks possess a pedagogical quality that makes them valuable tools in educational contexts: their multimodal nature allows children to access content through images, words, narrative rhythm and emotions. A picturebook becomes a mediator, a bridge that facilitates comprehension, supports imagination and enables the construction of shared meaning. Thanks to the combination of different languages, picturebooks foster inclusion, welcome diverse cognitive styles and make participatory learning possible, allowing each child to find their own way of engaging with knowledge. In this sense, picturebooks are not merely books but pedagogical devices capable of supporting growth, stimulating curiosity and opening children’ s gaze toward the world.
In the eTwinning project Animals of Europe, this potential became the narrative thread connecting children of different ages in the discovery of European wildlife. The collaboration between a preschool section and a primary school class created a 3 – 6 vertical continuum where images, words and relationships shaped the learning pathway.
